SAMANTHA PLEET

In Plaid on 03/15/2011 at 5:08 PM

Brooklyn local designer Samantha Pleet’s namesake collection has quickly become fashion staple to creative minds. The eco-conscious clothes have been heard to occupy significant space on the closets of the girls on your iTunes’ latest played list. Music, art and literature all come together to inspire Pleet’s unorthodox aesthetics making for a line suited for a Neo-Noir muse. Her collaborative effort with Urban Outfitters on line “Rapscallion by Samantha Pleet” is also worth a screening. Spellbound yet?

CAMP OUT THERE

In Plaid on 12/13/2010 at 11:01 PM

Camp Out There’s Designers Hayden Dunham, Josephine Heilpern and Kimberly Mullis have set up camp at the Brooklyn creative scene. Their line specializes in one of a kind and custom handmade objects that seem to have been grown in organic fashion soil. The line’s elementary aesthetic is seeded with a contemporary edge that seems knitted to the urban naturalist. What kind of seeds do I need to grow that?

WILDFOX

Dropping temperatures and an increasing need to cuddle have got me obsessing about Wildfox ‘s stylish Knits. Bored by the seriousness of the fashion industry, Emily Faulstich and Kimberley Gordon shared crayons and ideas and Wildfox came alive. Their combined interest of fashion and fascination with sleepovers, dreams and epic books resulted in a line of “accidentally cool” casual wear. Where’s my sock?

Miami up and coming women’s fashion line Proust is written in the likes of a French novel. Noele Norton inks in her Spring/Summer 2011 line with dresses in prose, punctuated femininity and a time defiant muse. The Miami based Brazilian designer is bound to become a best-seller in the contemporary fashion designers section. Floridians make sure your sunnies are ready for this fashion ray. Believe me on this one, wear sunscreen.

Silva/Bradshaw is a multi-disciplinary design powerhouse founded by artists Matthew Bradshaw and Sergio Silva. Their conceptual designs evolve around their enthusiasm for technology and materials. Their current line of simple jewelry just released in August of this year is refreshingly simple and modern. As they describe it themselves, the line is a series of simple, anonymous shapes that look like they should do something. Available as rings of varying proportions ranging from the ignorant to the conservative.

ANTIPODIUM

The London based brand Antipodium creates fashion for the fiercely individualistic, effortlessly cool and unapologetically confident crowd. Whoever that is. Antipodium’s Aussie creative director, Geoffrey J. Finch, has reflected his pop culture inspired surroundings, rural childhood and effervescent artistic neighborhood of Shoreditch into his creations. Antipodium is not only known for having on-point party wear and much needed basics with a twist but mostly for its playful use of Australian iconography and catchy garment names. Finch is infamous for his  ‘No Romance’ parties, but his A/W 10 “Brides of Christ” Collection with sheer fabrics, asymmetry and velvet bodysuits has managed to overcome it. Amen.

SHABD SIMON-ALEXANDER

In Plaid on 07/10/2010 at 10:54 PM

Shabd Simon-Alexander’s line is a system of millions or billions of stars, together with fashion and edge, held together by gravitational attraction. The young Williamsburg designer translates her obsession with outer space and psychedelic prints into her tie-dye centric collections. Leggings, bodysuits, scarves and totes that could only blend in on a seventies inspired psychedelic wallpapered room. The craftsmanship of the line is utterly obvious in her attention to fabrics and compositions. Each piece is unique and varied in color and dye pattern, which are inspired by Hubble telescope photos of worlds being born and stars dying. Let’s talk about spaceships?
