Mixed Tapes: Dead Ghosts

In Mixed Tapes on 09/22/2011 at 5:37 PM

Dead Ghosts are the reason your girlfriend left you. Ignited by cheap beer, the four-piece band from Vancouver makes rowdy songs to shake your long hair to. Dead Ghosts’ debut 7″ single ‘what to do/god only knows’ is Off The Hook. Raw Vancouver weirdness filled with sweet guitar pluck-and-jangle and doo-woppy choruses. “ I Want Your Love”  and “What to Do” are not to miss. Some might say Floridas dying, i say it’s dead. Dead Ghosts.

The Impossible Project

In Mixed Tapes on 09/01/2011 at 11:40 PM

Impossible Project has one concrete aim: To keep the magic of analog Instant Photography alive by inventing and producing new instant film materials for Vintage Polaroid cameras. The mission was not to re-build Polaroid film but to develop a new product with new characteristics. Finding new solutions for replacing problematic or unavailable components to carry Instant Film production into the 21st century. Impossible has also opened Project Spaces in New York City, Tokyo and Vienna that serve as vivid hubs for analog instant photography. Not only carrying all available analog films and cameras, but also feature exhibitions of a wide range of artistic projects of artists including Nobuyoshi Araki, Adam Goldberg and Ryan McGinley. The Future is analogue. Polaroid me?

Mixed Tapes: Craft Spells

In Mixed Tapes on 04/10/2011 at 6:53 PM

I want you to listen to this. You Should Close The Door. Craft Spells is the kind of band too good to share just with anyone, but you’re not anyone. Craft Spells started as just another bedroom pop project, but happened to be the missing piece in the DYI music scene puzzle. Songs like “You Should Close The Door” and “For The Ages” could easily pass for incantations, or are they? California native Justin Vallesteros is the mastermind behind the dreamy pop basslines, and spell casting synths that will leave you in a state of enchantment. Careful not to drool.

Mixed Tapes: Guards

In Mixed Tapes on 03/01/2011 at 8:33 PM

Guards came about when Richie Follin wrote and recorded songs for his younger sister, Madeline of the band Cults, but ended up singing on the songs himself. A “Tweet” from Cults turned the low-key project into a social media musical sensation and unintentionally woke up the dead. The self-titled EP of cryptic pop is available for free download on the Band Camp website. Songs “Don’t Wake The Dead” and “I See It Coming” are not to miss. Did you see it coming?

Mixed Tapes: Sonny & The Sunsets

In Mixed Tapes on 11/26/2010 at 4:05 PM

Most animals don’t know a loving tree from a telephone pole, whereas most people don’t know a good album from one with an expiration date on it. It will only take a minute for Sonny & the Sunsets to become your latest band crush. Sonny & The Sunsets is San Francisco based singer-songwriter and film director Sonny Smith, and a loose collective of friends. The Sunsets include members of The Fresh & Onlys, Citay, Dry Spells and a Sub Pop recording artist. Tomorrow is Alright is the perfect hangover album filled with songs about social animals, stolen keys, love and consequently, getting burned. I never learn.

Mixed Tapes: Deaf Poets

In Mixed Tapes on 10/11/2010 at 6:07 PM

The PBR soaked sound coming from Deaf Poets is not only bending palm trees but also breaking expectations. The Miami Duo, Sean Wouters and Nicolas Espinosa, has been making stiff-necked locals’ heads bob and creating quite a stir. Deaf Poets’ music has the starkness of a garage rock band combined with the eagerness of a punk 80’s band. The eager verve of each stringed note and ride cymbal hit has got me believing all their lies. Will you too?

Mixed Tapes: Small Black

In Mixed Tapes on 09/14/2010 at 10:37 PM

Small Black is the cool noise coming from your roommate’s room. The novel sounding band is based nowhere but the last door in the hallway, Brooklyn, New York.  Josh, Ryan, Juan and Jeff are the ones to blame for the dreamy acoustical pop leaking on the corners of your door. Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out,  remix of Small Black‘s song Despicable Dogs is also worth a listen. With their self-titled album coming out this month,it will definitely be my endless loop cassette of choice this fall. A music lover, is never a Bad Lover.

Mixed Tapes: The Drums

In Mixed Tapes on 08/18/2010 at 9:19 PM

The drums are the classic glass soda bottle in an isle of canned pops. Childhood friends, Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham, are the base of the catchy indie pop band The Drums. Since Summer Camp the band has not only added two new members, Adam Kessler and Connor Hanwick, but transformed every single one of their concerts into a 50’s dance party. Roll up your jeans, spike the fruit punch and get ready to wear out your oxford’s soles. Sputnik, who?
